Spotlight Series with Food Scientist, and R&D Expert: Safir Moizuddin
Finding a manufacturer that you trust to produce your products is no small task, but your manufacturer can make it easier by fully involving you in the R&D process.
Research and development is a huge part of the manufacturing process. It is important that your manufacturer takes the time to understand your needs as a client, and your customers’ needs as consumers. Our R&D team takes pride in providing unique formulations for your unique brand. Our head of R&D, Food Scientist Safir Moizuddin is here to tell you about our process of formulation from start to finish.
“One of the things I love and enjoy greatly about R&D is communication. The R&D department is always in touch with the other departments because we always need testers,” joked Saffir. “When people see me coming, they run the other way because they know I am going to ask them to test a product.” Saffir has been a Food Scientist for over 20+ years, holding positions at companies like Coca Cola. He has been part of the Beneficial Blends team for 3 years and has formulated numerous products including CBD, coconut oil, olive oil and ghee. His favorite part of the formulation process is flavorings and test tasting. He enjoys seeing people’s reactions to trying his formulations.
Beginning the Formulation Process
Safir begins by getting an understanding of your expectations. There are some questions that need to be answered to begin formulating.
- What kind of market are you looking to be in? Natural? Organic?
- Where do you plan to sell the product?
- Who is your customer?
- Which certifications are you interested in? Vegetarian? Kosher?
Our consulting team, along with Safir, works with you to answer these questions and fill in any blanks you may have. Once all the details are nailed down, our R&D team will have a better idea of what you are envisioning for your product.
These questions will also narrow down the ingredients that can be used. For example, some food-based retailers only sell organic or natural products. “Especially when it comes to natural and organic, certain ingredients are a no-no. That curtails how I am going to design the product” says Safir. We specialize in these niches and can easily work within these limitations. You will also need to choose your flavorings, additives and adaptogens for your product. Any flavor you can think of, we can add, but according to Safir, some flavors work better with different oil bases. Using his vast experience, Safir can expertly help you navigate all your options, and find the best ones based on your needs.
When it comes to the formulation process, “I want the customer to be in the driver’s seat” says Safir. As the client, we want you to be as involved or not involved as you want to be. If you prefer a hands-on approach, our dedicated team members are on hand, ready to advise, and answer any questions you have.
Once the formula is ready, samples are sent out as quickly as possible to get client feedback. Then, “we adjust accordingly” based on that feedback. Typically, turnaround time is less than 2 weeks, but can vary depending on how readily available the ingredients are. We have many ingredients in house but if a client is looking for something specific, we can quickly source it. Thanks to our 12 years’ experience, we have secured extensive supplier relationships with multiple suppliers as to avoid supply chain delays.
According to Safir, “our main driver is safety.” Once the client approves the formula, we look at things like stability. This includes how the product holds up over time, and if there are any changes. Formulations are checked multiple times throughout the packing process to ensure quality and safety.
Whether your brand is an idea or already established, we work with clients at any point in their business plan and provide value at every step of the process.
